1. Meeting ok Senate.—The Senate met at, eleven a.in., pursuant to adjournment.--The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair. ·
2. PRAYERS. 3. Question. -A question on notice was answered.
4. Leave of Absence.- Senator A. ,1. M. Rankin moved, by leave—That leave of absence for four weeks be granted to Senator Tate on account of absence overseas. Question—put and passed.
5. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act—Appointments -Department— Health—P. I). Abbott. Postmaster-General's—H. Barber.

Suspension of Standing Orders.· -The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), pursuant to contingent notice, moved- That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without· delay. Question —put and passed. On the motion of the Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner) the Bill was read a first time. Senator Spooner moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator McKenna the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
7. Sales Tax Bills (Nos. 1 to !)) 1950.— Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. President, Message No. 45.

Suspension of Standing Orders to deal with Bills together.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That so much of the. Standing Orders be suspended as: would prevent the Questions with regard to the several stages for the passage through the Senate of all or several of the Sales Tax Bills Nos. 1 to 9 being put in one motion, at each stage, and the consideration of all or several of such Bills together in Committee of the Whole.

Debate ensued. Question—put a.nd passed, there being present an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators, and no dissentient voice. Suspension of Standing Orders to prevent delay.—Senator O’Sullivan, pursuant to contingent notice,
moved— That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bills being passed through all their stages without delay. Question—put and passed. On the motion of the Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner) the Bills were read a first time. Senator Snooner moved—That the Bills be now read a second time.
On the motion of Senator McKenna the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
8. Commonwealth Aid R oads Bill 1950.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :—

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to grant and apply out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund sums for the purpose of Financial Assistance to the States to be applied in the Construction, Reconstruction, Maintenance and Repair of Roads and Works connected with Transport, and for other purposes ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

first time. Senator McLeay moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator McKenna the debate was adjourned. Senator McLeay moved—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for a later hour
of the day. Debate ensued. Question—put and negatived. On the motion of Senator McLeay the resumption of the debate was made an Order of the Day for the
next day of sitting.
9. P ost and T elegraph R ates Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Question—put and passed. Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.
In the Committee.
Clauses 1 and 2 agreed to. Clause 3 debated and agreed to. Clause 4 agreed to. Title agreed to. Bill to be reported without amendment.
The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Nicholls). reported accordingly. On the motion of the Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper) the Report from the Committee was adopted, and the Bill read a third time.
10. Wool Sales Deduction (Administration) Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed.
And it being 10.30 p.m.
11. Adjournment.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—resolved in the affirmative.
The Senate adjourned.at eighteen minutes to eleven p.m. till Tuesday next at three p.m.
12. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Devlin, Guy, Tangney (on leave), Tate (on leave), Wood, and Wright (on leave).
