JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

WEDNESDAY, 2 2 n d NOVEMBER, 1950.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. States Grants (Additional Tax R eimbursement) Bill 1950.—Governor-General’s Message.—The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by the President:— .

W. J. McKELL, Governor-General. Message No. 11.

A Proposed Law intituled “ States Grants (Additional Tax Reimbursement) Act 1950 ” as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Law.

Government House, Canberra, 20th November, 1950.

4. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

5. P aper.—The following Paper was presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act—Appointment—Department of Health—B. E. Christophers.

6. Australian Soldiers’ R epatriation Bill 1950.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper), pursuant to notice, moved—That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act to amend the Australian Soldiers’ Repatriation Act 1920-1949, and for other purposes. Question—put and passed. -

7. P ostponement.—Ordered—That Order of the Day No. 1, Government Business, be postponed until after the consideration of Order of the Day No. 2.

8. W ool Sales Deduction (Administration) Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Ordered—That the debate be adjourned till a later hour of the day, and that Senator Fraser have leave

to continue his speech on the resumption of the debate.

Australian Soldiers’ R epatriation Bill 1950.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper), pursuant to leave granted this day, brought up a Bill for an Act to amend the Australian Soldiers’ Repatriation Act 1920-1949, and for other purposes. On the motion of Senator Cooper the Bill was read a first time. Suspension of Standing Orders.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—

That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through its remaining stages without delay. Question—put and passed, there being present an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators, and no dissentient voice. Senator Cooper moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate ensued.

On the motion of Senator Wordsworth the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

10. Wool Sales Deduction (Administration) Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed.

And it being 11 p.m.—

11. Adjournment.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. Question—resolved in the affirmative. The Senate adjourned at eleven p.m., till to-morrow at eleven a.m.

12. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Devlin, Guy, Tangney (on leave), Tate, and Wright (on leave).
