1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at a quarter-past three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

5. Commonwealth B ank B ill 1950 [No. 2],—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Senator Ryan moved—That Senator Cameron be granted an extension of time for thirty minutes.

K orea—Ministerial Statement.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), by leave, informed the Senate that a statement regarding the position in Korea, which had been promised for both Houses, would be deferred until certain decisions had been made by the Security Council of the United Nations Organization.

7. Commonwealth B ank B ill 1950 [No. 2].—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Ordered—That the debate be adjourned till a later hour of the day, and that Senator Piesse have leave

to continue his speech on the resumption of the debate.

8. States Grants B ill 1950.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. P resident, Message No. 35.

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to grant and apply out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund sums for the purposes of Financial Assistance to the States of South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

Suspension of Standing Orders.—The Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner), pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without delay. . Question—put and passed. On the motion of Senator Spooner the Bill was read a first time. Senator Spooner moved—That, the Bill be now read a second time.

On the motion of Senator Ashley the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

9. Commonwealth B ank B ill 1950 [No. 2].—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. On the motion of Senator Amour the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

10. A djournment.—The Senate adjourned at two minutes to eleven p.m. till to-morrow at eleven a.m.
