1. Meeting of Sen a te.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

3. Communist P arty D issolution B ill 1950 [No. 2].—Governor-Gen era l’s Message.—The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by the President:—

W. J. McKELL, Governor-General. . Message No. 5.

A Proposed Law intituled, “ Communist Party Dissolution Act, 1950 ” as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Law.

6. Supply B ill (No. 2) 1950-51.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :—

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to grant and apply a sum out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund for the service of the year ending the thirtieth day of June, One thousand nine hundred and fifty-one ” , in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

Suspension of Standing Orders.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without delay. Question—put and passed. The Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner) moved—That the Bill be now read a first time. On the motion of Senator Ashley the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

7. Order of B usiness—S uspension of Standing Orders Moved.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the resumption of the debate upon Government Business, Order of the Day No. 1 (Commonwealth Bank Bill) being called on forthwith. Debate ensued.
