JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

TUESDAY, 17th OCTOBER, 1950.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

4. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, by Command of His Excellency the Governor-General— Nauru— ■

Orders— 1948— No. 1—Judiciary Ordinance—Rules of Court (Admission of Barristers and Solicitors). 1949— No. 1—Quarantine (Animals) Regulations. Ordinances—

1948— No. 2—Judiciary. 1949— No. 1—Oaths. No. 2—Marriages.

The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act—Appointments—Department— Civil Aviation—R. E. Gillman. Supply—D. G. Collingwood.

5. Order of Business—Suspension of Standing Orders.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the resumption of the debate upon Government Business, Order of the Day No. 1 (Communist Party Dissolution Bill) being called on forthwith. Question—put and passed, there being present an absolute( majority of the whole number of Senators,

and no dissentient voice.

6. Communist P arty D issolution B ill 1950 [No. 2j.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. On the motion of the Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner) the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for a later hour of the day.

7. P ostponement.—Ordered—That Order of the Day No. 1, General Business, be postponed until a later hour of the day.

8. Commonwealth Bank Bill 1950 [No. 2],—The Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator Ashley the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

9. Communist P arty D issolution B ill 1950 [No. 2].—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. z

Debate resumed. '

And it, being 10.30 p.m.— .

10. Adjournment.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. Question—resolved in the affirmative. The Senate adjourned at half-past ten p.m. till to-morrow at three p.m.

11. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators McLeay, Maher, Tangney (on leave) and Tate. JOHN EDWARDS, Clerk of the Senate.
