1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., in accordance with the terms of the Resolution of the Senate passed on the 6th July, 1950.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair. ‘

3. Constitution Alteration (Prices) Bill 1950.—Senator McKenna, pursuant to leave granted on the 22nd June, 1950, brought up a Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution by empowering the Parliament to make Laws with respect to Prices. On the motion of Senator McKenna the Bill was read a first time. Suspension of Standing Orders.—Senator McKenna moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be

suspended as would prevent the Bill from passing through its remaining stages without delay and, unless otherwise ordered, from taking precedence over Government and other General Business so long as it remains on the Notice Paper. Debate ensued. Closure Moved.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper) moved—That the Question be now put. Question—That the Question be now put—put. '

4. Communist Party Dissolution Bill 1950 [No. 2].—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. President, Message No. 28.

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to provide for the Dissolution of the Australian Communist Party and of other Communist Organizations, to disqualify Communists from holding certain Offices, and for purposes connected therewith ” , in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

5. Ministerial Duties.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), by leave, announced the following re-arrangement of Ministerial duties during the absence abroad of Mr. Spender and Mr. McEwcn--Prime Minister (Mr. Menzics) as acting Minister for External Affairs and acting Minister for

External Territories. Minister for Fuel, Shipping and Transport (Senator McLeay) as acting Minister for Commerce and Agriculture.

6. Adjournment .—The Senate adjourned at eight minutes past ten p.in. till to-morrow at eleven a.in.
