1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.·—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

3. Distinguished Visitor.—The President informed the Senate that' Field-Marshal Sir William Slim, G.C.B., G.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., Chief of the Imperial General Staff, was in the precincts of the Senate, and he proposed, with the concurrence of honorable Senators, to invite him to take a seat in the Chamber. And Senators concurring, the distinguished visitor was admitted and took a seat on ^ the floor of the Senate. '

Resolution to be reported.
The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Nicholls) reported that the Committee had considered Message No. 5 of the House of Representatives in reference to the Social Services Consolidation Bill, and had disagreed to the Amendments made by the House of Representatives in the Bill. â
On the motion of the Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner) the Report from the Committee was adopted. Senator McKenna moved-—That Senators Ashley, Cooke, and McKenna be a Committee to draw up Reasons for the Senate disagreeing to the Amendments made by the House of Representatives. Question—put. And so it was resolved in the affirmative. Senator McKenna brought up the Report from the Committee for Reasons. Reasons read, as follows :— Reasons of the Senate for disagreeing to the Amendments of the House of Representatives.
1. Because there is an obligation on the Parliament to ensure that the grant of Child Endowment is not defeated by the action of a body other than the Parliament. 2. Because an additional family endowment of five shillings per week is inadequate.
