JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

THURSDAY, 2 0 t h APRIL, 1950.

1. Meeting ok Senate.—The Senate met at half-past ten a.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Question.—A question on notice was answered.

4. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Dairy Produce Export Control Act—Twenty-fourth Annual Report of the Australian Dairy Produce Board, for year 1948-49. Lands Acquisition Act—Land acquired for—

Defence purposes— Archcrfield, Queensland. Cairns, Queensland. Department of Civil Aviation purposes— ·

Blackall, Queensland. Coonamble, New South Wales. Postal purposes— Goulburn, New South Wales.

Taree, New South Wales. Telephonic purposes—Bega, New South Wales. Seamen’s Compensation Act—Regulations—Statutory Rules 1950, No. 18. Wool Use Promotion Act—Regulations—Statutory Rules 1950, No. 8.

5. Social Services Consolidation Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed.

Suspension of Silling.—At a quarter to one p.m., the sitting of the Senate was suspended till three pun.

And the Senate having resumed — Debate continued. Suspension of Standing Order No. 407a.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That so much of Standing Order No. 407a be suspended as would prevent the Minister for

Social Services (Senator Spooner) speaking in reply for more than thirty minutes. Question—put and passed, there being present an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators, and no dissentient voice. Debate continued. Question—That the Bill be now read a second time—put and passed. Bill read a second time. ■

The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Clause 1 read— To report progress and ask leave to sit again.

The Deputy-President resumed the Chair ; and the Temporary Chairman of Committees (Senator Nash) reported that the Committee had considered the Bill and had made progress, and asked leave to sit again. Ordered—That the Committee have leave to sit again on the next day of sitting.

6. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Wednesday next at three p.m. -

Question—put and passed.

7. Adjournment . —The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. ·

Debate ensued. Question- -put, and passed. The Senate adjourned at twenty minutes past nine p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.

8. Attendance .—Present, all the Members except Senators Aylctt, Codings, Maher, Ryan, Simmonds, Tungney and Wood. JOHN EDWARDS, Clerli of the Senate.
