JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

WEDNESDAY, 19th APRIL, 1950.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.--The .President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. P etrol from F ormosa—Statement.— Suspension of Standing Orders.—The Leader of the Opposition (Senator Ashley) moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as'would prevent Senator Critchley ma'king a statement in regard to a question he proposes to ask with reference to petrol. Question—put and passed, there being present an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators,

and no dissentient voice. Senator Critchley thereupon made a statement regarding the alleged failure of an Australian importing firm to obtain dollar-frce petrol from Chinese Nationalist stocks in .Formosa.

4·. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

6. Social Services Consolidation Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Senator Cooke asked leave to continue his speech on the resumption of the debate.

Objection being raised, leave not granted. Debate continued. Senator Finlay moved—That the debate be now adjourned.

Question—put. The Senate divided—

And so it was resolved in the affirmative. .

Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

7. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till to-morrow at half-past ten a.m. Question—put and passed.

8. Adjournment .—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued.

And the Senate having continued to sit until twelve o’clock midnight—

THURSDAY, 20th APRIL, 1950, a .m.

Debate continued. Closure.—Senator Finlay moved—That the Question he now put. Question—put and passed, there being more than thirteen Senators present voting in favour of the motion.

Question—That the Senate do now adjourn—put accordingly, and passed. ’The Senate adjourned at ten minutes past twelve o’clock midnight till this day at half-past ten a.m.

9. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Aylett, Ceilings, Maher, Ryan, Sheehan, Simmonds and Wood.
