JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

THURSDAY, 30th MARCH, 1950.

1. Meeting ok Senate.—The Senate met at half-past ten a.m., pursuant to adjournment.--The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered. ■

• 4. Paper.—The following Paper was presented, pursuant to Statute— Dairy Produce Export Control Act—Regulations—Statutory Rules 1950, No. 11.

5. Social Services Consolidation B ill 1950. — Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed.

Suspension of Sitting.— At five minutes to five p.m., the sitting of the Senate was suspended till eight p.m.

And the Senate having resumed— Debate continued. On the motion of Senator O’Byrne the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

6. A ddress-in-11eply to the Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Presentation of Address, and R eply.—The President reported to the Senate that, accompanied by honorable Senators, he had this day waited upon the Governor-General and had presented to him the Address-in-Replv to the speech of His Excellency on the occasion of the Opening of the First Session of the

Nineteenth Parliament, agreed to on the 23rd March, 1950, and that His Excellency had been pleased to make the following reply :— Government House, Canberra, 30th March, 1950.

Mr. P resident, I desire to thank you for your Address-in-Reply, which you have just presented to me. It will afford nr; much pleasure to convey to His Most Gracious Majesty The King the message of loyalty from i.he Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia to w'hich the Address gives

expression.

7. Papers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act,—Appointments—Department of Trade and Customs— R. R. Bull, N. F. Walker. Defence (Transitional Provisions) Act—National Security (Industrial Property) Regulations—

Orders—Inventions and designs (3). Seat of Government Acceptance Act and Scat of Government (Administration) Act— Regulations—1950—No. 1 (Leases Ordinance).

8. N ext Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Wednesday, 19th April, at three p.m. Question—put and passed.

9. Adjournment .—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senatu- O’Sullivan) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. The Senate adjourned at twenty-five minutes past ten p.m. till Wednesday, 19 th April, at three p.m.

10. Attendance .—Present, all the Members except Senators Aylctt, Ceilings, Lamp, Morrow, Murray, Simmonds (on leave) and Wordsworth.
