WEDNESDAY, 29th MARCH, 1950.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Addrf.ss-in-Revly to the Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Appointment to P resent.— The President informed the Senate that he had ascertained that His Excellency the Governor- General would be pleased to receive the Address-in-Reply at Government House at a quarter past five p.m. to-morrow. He invited Senators to accompany him on the occasion.

Suspension of Sitting.—At three minutes past three p.m., the sitting of the Senate was suspended till eight p.m.

And the Senate having resumed—

4. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

5. P a pers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act—Appointments—Department— Attorney-General’s—B. R. Gallon. interior—E. B. Kell, E. F. Phillips, R. L. Southern, A. G. Tyler, W. R. Wilkie.

Supply and Development—K. H. Tate. Lands Acquisition Act—Land acquired for— Department of Civil Aviation purposes— Broome, Western Australia.

Mount Isa, Queensland. Postal purposes— Mount Hawthorn, Western Australia. St. Kilda, Victoria.

6. Social Services Consolidation Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Ordered—That the debate be adjourned till the next day of sitting, and that Senator Nash have leave

to continue his speech on the resumption of the debate.

7. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till to-morrow at half-past ten a.m. Question—put and passed.

8. Adjournment .—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. The Senate adjourned at seventeen minutes past eleven p.m. till to-morrow at half-past ten a.m.

9. Attendance .—Present, all the Members except Senators Aylett, Collings, Lamp, Siminonds (on leave) and Wordsworth.
