JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

THURSDAY, 23rd MARCH, 1950.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

4. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act—Appointments—Department of Works and Housing— C. E. Robertson, D. T. Thomson, H. C. Williams.

5. H ouse Committee.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave— That a House Committee be appointed, to consist of the President, Senators Amour, G. J. Rankin, Reid, Tangney, Wedgwood and Wordsworth, with power to act during Recess, and to confer or sit as a Joint Committee with a similar Committee of the House of Representatives. Question—put and passed.

6. Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Address-in-Rerly.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion (by Senator McCallum), viz.—That the following Address-in-Reply be agreed to :— To H is Excellency the Governor-General.

May it please Your E xcellency— We, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia in Parliament assembled, desire to express our loyalty to our Most Gracious Sovereign, and to thank Your Excellency for the Speech which you have been pleased to address to Parliament.

- Debate resumed. Question—put and passed. Ordered—That the Address-in-Reply be presented to His Excellency the Governor-General by the President and such Senators as may desire to accompany him. The Deputy-President informed the Senate that the President would ascertain when His Excellency

the Governor-General would be pleased to receive the Address-in-Reply. When the time was fixed he would acquaint the Senate thereof.

7. Social Services Consolidation B ill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator Nash the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

8. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Wednesday next at three p.m. Question—put and passed.

9. Adjournment.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. The Senate adjourned at six minutes to ten p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.

10. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Aylett, Devlin, Fraser, Hendrickson, Piesse, Robertson, Scott, Simmonds (on leave) and Willesee.
