THURSDAY, 1 6 t h MARCH, 1950.
1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.
2. PRAYERS.
3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.
4. P aper.—The following Paper was presented, pursuant to Statute— Commonwealth Public Service Act—Appointment—Department of Works and Housing— R. G. C. Agnew.
5. Leave of Absence.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper) moved, by leave—That leave of absence for four weeks be granted to Senator Simmonds on account of ill-health. Question—put and passed.
6. Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Address-in-Reply.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion (by Senator McCallum), viz.—That the following Address-in-Reply be agreed to :— To H is Excellency the Governor-General.
May it please Your E xcellency— We, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia in Parliament assembled, desire to express our loyalty to our Most Gracious Sovereign, and to thank Your Excellency for the Speech which you have been pleased to address to Parliament.
Debate resumed. On the motion of Senator Critchley the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
7. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Wednesday next at three p.m. Question—put and passed.
8. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at twenty-two minutes to ten p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.
9. Atte n d a n c e .—Present, all the Members except Senators Arnold, Aylett, Beerworth, Gorton, Rankin, G. J., Scott, Simmonds (on leave), Tangney and Wright.
