JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.
THURSDAY, 9th MARCH, 1950.
1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair.
2. PRAYERS.
3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.
4. Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Address-in-R eply.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion (by Senator McCallum), viz.—That the following Address-in-Reply be agreed to :— To His Excellency the Governor-General.
May it please Your E xcellency— We, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia in Parliament assembled, desire to express our loyalty to our Most Gracious Sovereign, and to thank Your Excellency for the Speech which you have been pleased to address to Parliament.
Debate resumed. On the motion of Senator Wright the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for a later hour of the day.
5. F oreign Affairs—Ministerial Statement—P aper.—The Attorney-General (Senator Spicer), by leave, made a statement outlining the foreign policy of the Australian Government. Senator Spicer then, by Command of His Excellency the Governor-General, laid upon the Table the following Paper—
Foreign Affairs—Ministerial Statement, 9th March, 1950. Suspension of Standing Order No. 14.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That Standing Order No. 14 be suspended to permit the moving of a motion for the printing of the Paper, and debate thereon, before the Address-in-Reply is adopted.
Question—put and passed, there being present an absolute'majority of the whole number of Senators, and no dissentient voice. Senator Spicer moved—That the Paper be printed. On the motion of Senator Ashley the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
6. Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Address-in -Reply.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion (by Senator McCallum), viz.—That the following Address-in-Reply be agreed to :— . To His Excellency the Governor-General.

8. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at twenty-nine minutes to eleven p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.
9. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Hannaford, Lamp, McKenna, Maher, Simmonds, Tangney and Wood.
