]. Meeting of Se n a t e.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.

Sugar I ndustry — Ministeria l Statem ent .—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane), by leave, made a statement on the subject of the production of sugar and the problems confronting the sugar industry, with particular reference to the recent interim report of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Rural Industries dealing with the matter.

4. P a p er s.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Arbitration (Public Service) Act—Determination by the Arbitrator, &c.---No. 43 of 1942 — Federated Public Service Assistants' Association of Australia. Australian Broadcasting Act—Tenth Annual Report and Balance-sheet, of the Australian

Broadcasting Commission for year 1941-42. Australian Soldiers’ Repatriation Act—Report of the Repatriation Commission for year 1941-42. Citrus Fruits Bounty Act—Return for year 1941-42. Invalid and Old-age Pensions Act, Maternity Allowance Act, Child Endowment Act, and

Widows’ Pensions Act- -F irst Report of the Director-General of Social Services for vear 1941-42, '

National Security Act,—National Security (General) Regulations—Order—Control of Liquid Paraffin. River Murray Waters Act--River Murray Commission—Report for year 1941-42 ; together with Statements furnished on behalf of the Governments of New South Wales. Victoria and

South Australia in respect of gaugings and quantities of water diverted.

5. Question s .—Questions on notice were answered.

6. I nternational Affa ir s —R ev iew of the War Situ a tion , 10th D ec em ber , 1942— Minister ia l Sta tem ent .—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion by the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane), viz.—-That the Paper be printed- - Debate resumed.

And it being four o'clock p.rn.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn— Which question was negatived.

Debate continued. Question—That the Paper he printed—put and passed.

L eave of Abs ence to all Senators du ring A d jo ur nm ent .— The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane), by leave, moved—That leave of absence be granted to every Member of the Senate from the determination of the sitting this day to the day on which the Senate next meets. Question—put and passed.

8. Nex t Meetin g o f th e Se n a t e.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane) moved--That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till a. day and hour to be fixed by the President, which time of meeting shall be notified to each Senator by telegram or letter, such day and hour to be not later than Wednesday, the 27th January next, at three o’clock p.m. Question—put and passed.

9. Ad jo u r n m e n t .—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane) moved—That, the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. The Senate adjourned at six minutes t.o six p.m. till a day and hour to be fixed by the President, which

time of meeting shall be notified to each Senator by telegram or letter, such day and hour to be not later than Wednesday, the 27th January next, at three o’clock p.m.
