1. Meeting of Senate.—The Seriate met at three p.m., in accordance with the terms of the Resolution of the Senate passed on 9th October, 1942. -
2. PRAYERS.
3. Vacancy in the R epresentation of Western Australia—Appointment of Senator Charles George Latham.—The President informed the Senate that, pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution, he had notified the Lieutenant-Governor of the State of Western Australia of the vacancy caused in the representation of that State in the Senate by the death of Senator Edward
Bertram Johnston, and that he had received, through His Excellency the Governor-General, a certificate of the choice of Charles George Latham as a Senator to fill such vacancy. The Certificate was laid on the Table, and read by the Clerk, as follows :— Government House,

I have the honour to certify that at a joint sitting of the Houses of Parliament of the State of Western Australia, held at Perth on this date, the Members of such Houses sitting and voting together, in pursuance of Section 15 of “ The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act ”, did choose Charles George Latham, Farmer, of Narembeen, to hold the place rendered vacant, by the
death of Senator Edward Bertram Johnston.

New Senator Sworn.—Charles George Latham, Senator for the State of Western Australia, was then introduced and made and subscribed the Oath of Allegiance at the Table, pursuant to the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act.
4. Governor-General’s Messages—Assent to Bills.—The following Messages from His Excellency the Governor-General were presented, and the same were read by the President-:— GOWRIE, Governor-General. Message No. 35.
A Proposed Law intituled “Statute of Westminster Adoption Act 1942” as finally passed by the Senate and the' House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Law.

5. Officers of the Senate—Changes.—The President informed the Senate that, owing to the retirement of Mr. R. A. Broinowski from the position of Clerk of the Senate, the following changes had been made in regard to the officers in attendance in the Chamber :— Mr. J. E. Edwards to be Clerk of the Senate.
Mr. R. H. C. Loof to be Clerk-Assistant. Mr. W. I. Emerton to be Usher of the Black Rod and Clerk of Committees.

6. Death of the H oxorahlk W. H. Laird Smith.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane),. by leave, moved—That, the Senate expresses its deep regret at the death of the Honorable William Henry Laird Smith, a former member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Denison and Commonwealth Minister, places on record its appreciation of his meritoriouspublicservices,and extends its sincere sympathy to his widow and family in their bereavement. And the motion having been seconded by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator McLcay), and supported
by Senators Gibson, Aylett, and Herbert Hays- And all Senators present having risen, in silence— Question—passed. I
