1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at half-past two p.m., pursuant to adjournment. · 2. PRAYERS. '

3. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, by command of His Excellency the Governor-General— Norfolk Island—Report for year ended 30th June, 1941. Papua—Annual Report for year 1940-41. The following Paper was presented, pursuant to Statute— ‘

Australian Imperial Force Canteens Funds Act—Twenty-second Annual Report, for year 1941-42. ··â–  -■

4. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered. , ;

5. Superannuation Bill 1942.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message , from the House of Representatives was received and read :— . > ■ ;

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to amend the ‘ Superannuation Act 1922-1937 ’ and for other purposes”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate. ' .

Suspension of Standing and Sessional Orders.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Codings), pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing and Sessional Orders be suspended ' as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without delay. '

Question—put and passed. On the motion of the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane) the Bill was read a first time. Senator Keane moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. - ' ..

Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

Clauses 1 to 20 agreed to. Clause 21 debated and agreed to. Clauses 22 to 27 agreed to. Clause 28 debated and agreed to. Clauses 29 to 34 agreed to. Clause 35 debated and agreed to. Clauses 36 to 42 agreed to. Title agreed to. Bill to be reported without amendment.

The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Brown) reported accordingly. On the motion of Senator Keane the Report from the Committee was adopted. Senator Keane moved—That the Bill be now read a third time. . . . ·â– . .

7. Sales Tax Assessment Bill (No. 1) 1942.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. P resident, Message No. 166.

The House of Representatives acquaints the Senate that it has agreed to the Amendment made by the Senate in the Bill intituled “A Bill for an Act to atnend the ‘ Income Tax Assessment Act 1936-1941 ’, as amended, by the ‘ Income Tax Assessment Act 1942 ’, and for other purposes ” .

9. Black Marketing Bill 1942.—Message from the House of Representatives.·—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. P resident, Message No. 168.

The House of Representatives acquaints the Senate that it has agreed to the Amendment made by the Senate in the Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to provide for the Prevention of Black Marketing". ""

11. Adjournment.—The Minister for the. Interior (Senator Codings) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. The Senate adjourned at twenty-two minutes past ten p.m. till to-morrow at half-past ten a.m.

12. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senator Wilson.
