1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met, at half-past two p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS.

3. S uspension of Standing Order No. 68.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Codings) moved— That Standing Order No. 68 be suspended up to and including the 9th October next, for the purpose of enabling New Business to be commenced after half-past ten o’clock at night. Question—put: and passed, there being present an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators,

and no dissentient voice.

4. Papers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Excise Act— Regulations--Statutory Rules 1942. No. 387. National Security Act— National Security (General) Regulations—

6. Order of the Day Discharged.- Ordered—That Government Business, Order of the Day No. 2 (Estimates and Budget Papers 1912-43), be read and discharged.

On the motion of the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane) the Bill was read a first time. Senator Keane moved—That the Bill be ndw read a second time. . Debate ensued.

Question—put and passed. Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

Clauses 1 and 2 agreed to. Clause 3 debated and agreed to. Clause 4 agreed to. The Schedule debated and agreed to.

The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Brown) reported accordingly. On the motion of Senator Keane the Report from the Committee was adopted, and the Bill read a third time.

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act Ιό grant and apply out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund sums for the purposes of Financial Assistance to the States of South Australia, Western Australia■ and Tasmania ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate. .

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate the following Resolution which was agreed to by the House of Representatives this day -That Mr. Marwick be appointed to serve on the -Joint Committee on Rural Industries. .
