JOURNALS OF THE SENATE. FRIDAY, 11th SEPTEMBER, 1942.
1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.
2. PRAYERS.
3. The late Duke of Kent.—The President informed the Senate that he had been advised by His Excellency the Governor-General that the Resolution passed by the Senate of the Commonwealth on the 2nd September, 1942, in connexion with the death of His late. Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, had been forwarded by cable to His Majesty the King who had replied as follows :—
“ I and my family deeply appreciate the message of sympathy from Members of the Senate in the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia on the death of my brother the Duke of Kent, who I know was so much looking forward to the time when it would be possible for him to take up his duties as Governor-General. The kind sentiments expressed by the Members of the Senate afford me much consolation in my sorrow.

4. Governor-General's Message -Assent to Bills.—The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by the President :— GOWR1E, Governor-General. Message No. 31.
Proposed Laws intituled :— “ Customs Tariff Validation Act 1942 ” “ Customs Tariff (Exchange Adjustment) Validation Act 1942 ” .
“ Customs Tariff (Special War Duty) Validation Act 1942 ” “ Customs Tariff (New Zealand Preference) Validation Act 1942 ” “ Customs Tariff (Canadian Preference) Validation Act 1942 ” as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having
been presented to the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Laws.: Government House, Canberra, 4th September, 1942.
5. Paters.—The following Paper was presented, by command of His Excellency the Governor-General— Exemption from military service—Private XV. Le Brocque—Papers in reply to question by Senator James McLachlan. The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute—
Arbitration (Public Service) Act—Determination by the Arbitrator, &c.—No. 32 of 1942— Amalgamated Postal Workers’ Union of Australia; and Federated Public Service Assistants’ Association of Australia. ’
Lands Acquisition Act—Land acquired at— Deer Park, X'ictoria—For Defence purposes. Southport, Queensland—For Postal purposes. Land Tax Assessment Act—List of Applications for Relief dealt with during the year 1941-42. National Security Act—
National Security (Army Inventions) Regulations—Orders--Inventions and Designs (4). National Security (General) Regulations—Orders— Control of paraffin wax. Inventions and Designs (259).
Taking possession of land, &c. (283). Regulations— Statutory Rules 1942, No. 376. Northern Territory Acceptance Act and Northern Territory (Administration) Act—Ordinances of 1942- ‘
No. 7 of 1942—Crown Law Officer Reference. No. 8 of 1942—Registration.
6. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.
7. Estimates and Budget-Papers 1942-43.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion by the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane), viz.—That the Papers be printed. Debate resumed.
And it hang four o’clock γ.ιη. on Friday—
8. Adjournment.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. And such Question being resolved in the affirmative— The Senate thereupon adjourned till XVednesday next at three p.m.
9. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Arnold, Gibson, Herbert Hays, McBride, and Wilson.
