1. M eeting of S enate .—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

3. War E xpenditure—J oint Committee.—Senator A. J. McLachlan brought up a Statement of subjects upon which confidential memorandums have been addressed bv the Committee to the Prime Minister for the consideration of War Cabinet.
-4. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Defence Act—Royal Military College—Report for 1941. National Security Act—National Security (General) Regulations—Orders— Prohibiting work on land (12).
Taking possession of land, ⢠5. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered. -6. Customs Tariff Validation Bill 1942.—Message from the Home of Representatives.—Th» following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. P resident, Message No. 146. The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A BUI for an Act to â¢provide for the Validation of Collections of Duties of Customs under Customs Tariff Proposals ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate. W. M. Nairn, House of Representatives, Speaker. Canberra, 3rd September, 1942. Suspension of Standing and Sessional Orders.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Codings), pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing and Sessional Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without delay. Question—put and passed. â On the motion of the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane) the Bill was read a first time. On the motion of Senator Keane the Bill was read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill. In the Committee. Clauses 1 to 4 agreed to. Title agreed to. Bill to be reported without requests. The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Brown) reported accordingly. On the motion of Senator Keane the Report from the Committee was adopted, and the Bill read a third time. 1 . P arliamentary Standing Committee on Broadcasting.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. P resident. Message No. 151. The House of Representatives acquaints the Senate that, in accordance with the provisions of the Australian Broadcasting Act 19)2, the following Members of the House of Representatives have been appointed members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Broadcasting, viz. :— Mr. Barnard, Mr. Calweli, Mr. Johnson, Sir Charles Marr, Mr. Price and Mr. Riordan. P arliamentary Standing Committee on Broadcasting.—Appointment of Senate Members.—· The Postmaster-General (Senator Ashley), by leave, moved—That, in accordance with the provisions of the Australian Broadcasting Act 1942, the following Senators be appointed members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Broadcasting, viz. :—Senator S. K. Amour, Senator W. J. Cooper, and Senator the Honorable Herbert ITays. Question—put and passed. 14. I nternational Affairs—R eview of the War Situation —Ministerial Statement.—The Postmaster-General (Senator Ashley), by leave, made a Statement on the subject of International Affairs and the progress of the war, and laid on the Table the following Paper, viz. :— By Command— International Affairs—Review of the War Situation, 3rd September, 1942—Ministerial Statement— and moved—That the Paper be printed. On the motion of Senator McLeay the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate lie an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting. 15. J oint Meeting of Members of the Senate and of the H ouse of R epresentatives—Secrecy of P roceedings.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Collings), by leave, moved—That a joint meeting of Members of the Senate and of the House of Representatives be convened this day for the purpose of discussing in secret the present war, and hearing confidential reports in relation thereto. Question—put and passed. 16. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Collings) moved—That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Thursday next, at three p.m. Question—put and passed. 17. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at eighteen minutes past four p.m. till Thursday next at, three p.m. . 18. Attendance.—Present·, all the Members except Senator Wilson. R. A.
