Question—put and passed. On the motion of the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane) the Bill was read a first time. Senator Keane moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate ensued.

On the motion of Senator Keane the following amendment was made, viz.—line 24, leave out “ or later than the pay day next succeeding the date ”, insert “, or later than the due date of the first instalment of pension after the date,” . Clause 18, as amended, agreed to. Clauses 19 to 21 agreed to. On the motion of Senator Keane the following new clause was inserted in the Bill to follow clause 21,
viz. :— “ 21a. If a successful claimant of a pension is an inmate of a benevolent asylum, Benevolent or if a pensioner becomes an inmate of a benevolent asylum, she shall not, so long as she Inmates, remains an inmate of such an asylum, be entitled to receive a pension at the maximum rate but shall, subject to this Act, be entitled to receive a pension at a rate determined in accordance with this Act, but not in any case exceeding Twenty-two pounds two shillings per annum.”. Clauses 22 to 24 agreed to. Clauses 25 and 26 debated and agreed to.
Clauses 27 and 28 agreed to. Clause 29 read— On the motion of Senator Keane the following amendment was made, viz.—line 37, after “ date ” insert or later than the due date of the first, instalment of allowance after the date,”.
Clause 29, as amended, agreed to. Clauses 30 to 34 agreed to. . Senator Keane moved—That the House of Representatives be requested to insert, after clause 34, the following new clause, viz. :—
“ 34a. Whenever the maximum rate of pension per annum is increased or reduced Adjustment in pursuance of the last preceding section, the maximum rate of pension per annum pinion °f payable to a pensioner, immediately prior to the increase or reduction, in pursuance of *° section twenty-one a of this Act, shall be increased or reduced by such amount, if any, pensioners, as the Minister determines, not exceeding one half of the amount by which the maximum rate of pension per annum is increased or reduced in pursuance of the last preceding section.”. Debate ensued. Request agreed to. Clauses 35 to 51 agreed to. Title agreed to. Bill to be reported with certain requests for amendments, and amendments.
The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Brown) reported · accordingly. On the motion of Senator Keane the Report from the Committee was adopted.
