JOURNALS OF THE SENATE. FRIDAY, 1st MAY, 1942.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS. 3. Rural Industries—J oint Committee—Third Progress Report.—Senator E. B. Johnston brought up the Third Progress Report from the Joint Committee on Rural Industries. 4. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

5. Excise Bill 1942.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Collings),in the absence of and at the request of the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator Keane), pursuant to notice, moved—That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act to amend the Excise. Act 1901-1934. Question—put and passed.

6. Australian Broadcasting Bill 1942.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Question—put and passed. Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Clauses 1 to 3 agreed to. Clause 4 read— Senator Gibson moved an amendment, viz.—after the definition of “ the Fund ” insert the following definition :—

“ 1 the Minister ’ shall be the Postmaster-General or the Minister administering this A ct; ”, Debate ensued. '

And Senator Gibson having, by leave, amended his proposed amendment by leaving out “ or the Minister administering this Act ”— Debate continued. Amendment agreed to. Clause 4, as amended, agreed to. Clauses 5 and 6 agreed to. Clause 7 debated— Senator Spicer moved an amendment, viz.—leave out sub-clause (4.). Debate ensued.

The President resumed the Chair ; and the Chairman of Committees (Senator Brown) reported that the Committee had considered the Bill and had made progress, and asked leave to sit again. Ordered—That the Committee have leave to sit again on the next day of sitting.

7. Adjournment.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Collings) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. And it being four o’clock p.m.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the

Senate do now adjourn. Question—resolved in the affirmative. The Senate thereupon adjourned till Wednesday next at three p.m.
