1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

3. Broadcasting—J oint Committee—Report.—Senator Gibson brought up the Report of the Joint Committee on Wireless Broadcasting, dated 5th March, 1942. Ordered to be printed.
4. Social Security—J oint Committee—Third I nterim R eport.—Senator Cooper brought up the Third Interim Report of the Joint Committee on Social Security, dated 25th March, 1942.
5. Loan Bill 1942.—Governor-General’s Message.—The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by the President:— GOWRIE, Governor-General. Message No. 21.
A Proposed Law intituled “ Loan Act 1942 ”, as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Law.

6. R ural I ndustries—J oint Committee.—The President informed the Senate that a letter had been received from Senator Aylett resigning from the Joint Committee on Rural Industries owing to pressure of other duties being performed by him. The Minister for the Interior (Senator Collings), by leave, moved—
(1) That Senator Aylett be discharged from attendance on the Joint Committee on Rural Industries. (2) That the foregoing resolution be communicated to the House of Representatives by Message. Question—put and passed.
7. Ministerial Statement—R e-arrangement of Ministerial D uties and Appointment to Australian Advisory War Council.—The Minister for the Interior (Senator Collings), by leave, informed the Senate that, during the absence from Australia of the Honorable Î. V. Evatt, the following re-arrangement of Ministerial duties, and appointment to the Australian Advisory War Council, had been made :—
The Honorable J. Curtin to be Acting Minister for External Affairs. The Honorable J. A. Beasley to be Acting Attorney-General. The Honorable J. B. Chifley to be a member of the Australian Advisory War Council.
8. Motion for Adjournment, to Debate Matter of U rgency.—Senator Allan MacDonald, in order to discuss a matter of urgent public importance, viz.—“ the critical position of the goldfields communities following upon the Government’s intimation that gold production must cease ”, moved—That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till nine a.m. to-morrow. Debate ensued.
Distinguished Visitor.—The President informed the Senate that the Honorable Daniel Clyne, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales, was in the precincts of the Senate, and he proposed, with the concurrence of Honorable Senators, to invite him to take a seat in the Chamber. And Senators concurring, the distinguished visitor was admitted and took a seat on the floor of the
Senate.
Debate continued. Motion, by leave, withdrawn.
9. P ostponement of Order of the Day.—The Order of the Day having been called on— Ordered—That the Order of the Day be postponed until after Questions on Notice have been answered, and Business of the Senate, Notices of Motion Nos. 1, 2 and 3, have been dealt with.
