JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.
WEDNESDAY, 2 0 t h AUGUST, 1941.
1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., in accordance with the terms of the Resolution of the Senate passed on 4th July, 1941.
2. PRAYERS.
3. P resident’s Commission to Administer Oath or Affirmation.—The President announced that he had received from His Excellency the Governor-General a Commission to administer to Senators the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance.
The Commission was read by the Clerk, as follows :— By His Excellency General the Right Honourable Alexander Gore Arkwright, Baron Cowrie, a Member of His Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most
Honourable Order of the Bath, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, upon whom has been conferred the Decoration of the Victoria Cross, Govermr-General and Commander- in-Chief in and over the Commonwealth oj Australia :
To Senator the Honourable J ames Cunningham, President of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia. Greeting :
Whereas by section 42 of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia it is amongst other things enacted that every Senator shall before taking his seat make and subscribe before the Governor-General, or some person authorized by him, an Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance in the form set forth in the Schedule to the aforesaid Constitution :
Now therefore I, Alexander Gore Arkwright, Baron C owrie, the Governor-General aforesaid, do by these Presents command and authorize you from time to time in the Parliament House of the Commonwealth, at Canberra, to administer the said Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance to such Senators as have not already taken and subscribed the same since their election to the Senate.

4. National F itness Bill 1941.—Governor-General’s Message.—The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by the President:— COWRIE, Governor-General. Message No. 14.
A Proposed Law intituled “ National Fitness Act 1941 ”, as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Governor- General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Law.

The L ate R ight H onorable Neville Chamberlain.—The President informed the Senate that he had received, through the Prime Minister, a copy of a letter from Mrs. Anne Chamberlain thanking the Senate for its motion of sympathy and condolence passed on the occasion of the death of the Right Honorable Neville Chamberlain......................

6. Death of the H onorable the R ev. J. B. R onald.—The Minister for Supply and Development (Senator McLcay), by leave, moved—That the Senate expresses its deep regret at the death of the Honorable the Reverend James Black Ronald, a former Member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Southern Melbourne, places on record its appreciation of his meritorious public service, and tenders its sincere sympathy to the members of his family in their bereavement. And the motion having been seconded by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Codings), and
supported by Senator Gibson— And all Senators present having risen, in silence— Question—passed.
7. Death of the H onorable J. G. Drake.—The Minister for Supply and Development (Senator McLeay), by leave, moved—That the Senate expresses its sincere regret at the death of the Honorable James George Drake, former Senator and Commonwealth Minister, places on record its appreciation of his meritorious public service, and tenders its sincere sympathy to the members of his family in their bereavement. And the motion having been seconded by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Codings), and
supported by Senator Cooper— And ad Senators present having risen, in sdence— Question—passed.
8. Death of F ormer Senator J. D. Millen.—The Minister for Supply and Development (Senator McLeay), by leave, moved—That the Senate expresses its sincere regret at the death of former Senator John Dunlop Millen, places on record its appreciation of his long and meritorious pubdc service, and extends its profound sympathy to his widow and family in their bereavement. And the motion having been seconded by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Codings),. and
supported by Senators E. B. Johnston, Herbert Hays, J. B. Hayes, and Sampson— — ' And ad Senators present having risen, in silence— Question—passed. f ;
9. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Supply and Development (Senator McLeay) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till to-morrow at half-past two p.m. Question—put and passed.
10. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at twenty-five minutes past three p.m. till to-morrow at half-past two p.m.
11. Attendance.—Present, ad the Members except Senators Foil, Allan MacDonald, and Wilson.
