SENATE.

THURSDAY, 2 1st OCTOBER, 1920.

1. Meeting ok S enate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered. ■

4. J udiciary B ill.—The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a third time. Question—put and passed. Bill read a third time and passed.

5. P ostponements. - Ordered—That the following postponements of Private Business be made, viz. :— Notice of Motion No. 1 to 28th October inst. Notice of Motion No. 2 to 4th November next.

G. N avigation B ill.—-Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Report from the Committee of the Whole on Message No. 47 of the House of Representatives, and Amendments. The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell) moved—That the Report be adopted. Question—put and passed.

7. I ncome T ax B ill.— The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the further consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Consideration resumed of clause 4 and the request for an amendment moved thereto, viz., That the House of Representatives be requested to amend the clause by inserting after the word “ hundred ”, in line 22, the words “ and fifty”. Request for amendment withdrawn. Clause 4 agreed to, after further debate. Clauses 3-9 agreed to. Schedules agreed to. Title agreed to. Bill to be reported without requests.

The President resumed the- Chair ; and Senator Bakliap, from the Committee, reported accordingly. Whereupon the Senate adopted such Report. The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) moved-—That the Bill be now read a third time. Debate ensued.

Question—put and passed. Bill read a third time and passed.

8. N ext Meeting ok Senate.—The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) moved—That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn until three p.m. on Wednesday, the 3rd November, 1920. Question—put and passed.

9. P ostponement.—Ordered That Order of the Day No. 4, Government Business, be postponed till the next day of sitting.

10. Senate Officials : Select Committee.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question— (1) That a Select Committee be appointed to inquire into and report to the Senate on the question of the position of the officials engaged in and about the Senate, and the

working of the Public Service Act so far as it concerns officers controlled by the Senate or Committees of the Senate. (2) That the Select Committee consist of Senators Senior, Duncan, Reid, Earle, Drake-Brock man, Elliott, and the Mover. Debate resumed.

12. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Adamson (on leave), Bolton, Buzacott, Cox, J. F. Guthrie, Henderson, Lynch (on leave), E. D. Millen (on leave), J. D. Millen, and Thomas.
