P apua B il l. Message from the House of Representatives.- The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :—·

The House of Representatives returns to the Senate the Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act lo amend Section Twenty of the ‘ Papua Act 1905’,” and acquaints the Senate that the House of Representatives has agreed to the Bill without amendment.

4. Census and Statistics B ill.- Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :—

The House of Representatives returns to the Senate the Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to amend the· ‘Census and Statistics Act 1905 ’, and acquaints the Senate that the House of Representatives has agreed to the Bill without amendment.

5. K algooui.ie to P ort A ugusta R ailway L ands B ill.—Message from llw House of Representatives — The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :—

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to amend the ‘Kalgooiiie to Port Augusta, Railway Lands Act 1918’,” with which it desires the concurrence of the Senate. .

Rill read a first time, and second reading made an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
6. P ostponement.—Ordered— That Order of the Day No. 1, Government Business, he postponed until after the consideration of Orders of the Day Nos. 2 and 3. F.251.

7. C ommonwealth Conciliation and A rbitration B il l.—The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the consideration of Message No. 18 of the House of Representatives.
In the Committee.
Message read. The Committee proceeded to consider the amendments, which are as follow :— Schedule of the Amendments made by the Senate to w hich th e H ouse of R epresentatives has disa g reed. .
No. 1.—Page 1, clause 2, leave out the following paragraph :— “ (a) by inserting in the definition of ‘ Employer’, after the word ‘ industry ’, the words ‘ and includes a Club ’ ; ”, No. 6.—Pages 5 and 6, clause 22, leave out the clause.
Reason of the House of Representatives for Disagreeing to Amendments Nos. 1 and 6 of the Senate— As clubs are in the same position as other employers as regards the employment of employees they should not be exempt from the duties imposed by law on corporations or persons generally.
The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell) moved— That the Committee do not insist on Amendments Nos. 1 and (i, disagreed to by the House of Representatives. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. Resolution to be reported.
The President resumed the C hair; and Senator Bale hap, from the Committee, reported that the Committee had considered Message No. 48 of the House of Representatives in reference to the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Bill, and had resolved not to insist on amendments Nos. 1 and 6, disagreed to by the House of Representatives. Whereupon the Senate adopted such Report.
8. N ext Meeting of S enate.—The Vice President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Wednesday next at three p.m. Question—put and passed.
9. A djournment.—The Senate adjourned at seventeen minutes past three p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.
10. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Adamson (on leave), Cox, Crawford, Elliott, Foil, Foster, Gardiner, Sir T. W. Glasgow, .1. F. Guthrie, R. S. Guthrie (on leave), Keating, Lynch (on leave), E. D. Milieu (on leave), J. 1). Milieu, Pearce, Plain, Reid, Thomas, and Wilson.
