JOURNALS OF THE SENATE

FRIDAY, 27th AUGUST, 1920.

1. M eeting of S enate.— The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS.

3. Q uestion.—A question on notice was answered.

4. W ar S ervice H omes B ill.—Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Bill, as reported. The Minister for Repatriation (Senator E. D. Millen) moved—That the Report be adopted. Question—put and passed. Ordered—That the third reading of the Bill be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

5. P aper.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator E. D. Millen) laid on the Table the following Paper, viz.:— Pursuant to Statute— Public Service Act.—Promotions, Department of the Treasury.—S. R. Peterson, H. L. Cox,

B. Perrin, Η. H. Emrhett, F. B. Lee, J. Y. Hawtin, Η. H. Trebilco, R. J. Mair, E. W. Tunks, W, R. Kinane.

6. I ndustrial P eace B il l.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. On motion of Senator Duncan, the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

7. R e tir em en t of the Clerk of the Se n a t e.—The President informed the-Senate that Mr. C. Gavan Duffy was to-day severing his connexion with the Senate in his capacity of Clerk. The President, after referring to the long and distinguished association of Mr. Duffy with the Parliamentary services of the Commonwealth, and the State of Victoria, and to his ability and devotion to duty, expressed the hope that he would have a long and happy period in which to enjoy the retirement he had so well earned. The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce), in supplementing the remarks of the President, on behalf

of his colleagues and himself, associated the Government with all the President had said concerning Mr. Duffy, and also thanked him personally for the many courtesies received from him during his term of office.

8. Adjournm ent.—T he Senate adjourned a t nine m inutes to one p.m., till W ednesday next a t three p.m.

9. A ttendance.— Present, all the Members except Senators Adamson (on leave), Cox, Crawford, Earle, Foster, Gardiner, J. F. Guthrie, R. S. Guthrie (on leave), and Lynch.
