JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS.

3. P apers.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen) laid on the Table the following Papers, viz. :— Pursuant to S ta tu te -Northern Territory.—Ordinance No. 1 of 1920.—Tin Dredging. War Service Homes Act.—Land acquired for War Service Homes purposes a t—

Goulburn, New South Wales (three notifications). Launceston, Tasmania. Mayfield, New South Wales.

•1. Message from the H ouse of R epresentatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read:— Mr. P resident, Message No. 3.

The House of Representatives acquaints the Senate that, in accordance with the provisions of the Commonwealth Public Works Committee Act 1913-1914, the following Members of the House of Representatives have been appointed Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works, viz.:—Mr. Atkinson, Mr. Bamford, Mr. Gregory, Mr. Mackay, Mr. Mathews,

and Mr. Parker Moloney.

5. Message from the H ouse of R epresentatives.—A ustralian Soldiers’ R epatriation Bill.— The following Message from the House of. Representatives was received and read :— Mr. P resident, Message No. 4.

The House of Representatives returns to the Senate the Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to make provision for the Repatriation of Australian Soldiers and for other purposes,” and acquaints the ■ Senate that it has agreed to the same with the amendments indicated by the annexed Schedule, with which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen) moved—That the Message be considered in Committee of the Whole on the next day of sitting. Question—put and passed.

6. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

7. I mmigration B il l .·—The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Clause 3 further considered. To report progress and ask leave to sit again.

The President resumed the C hair; and Senator Shannon, from the Committee, reported th at the Committee had considered the Bill and had made progress, and asked leave to sit again. Ordered—That the Committee have leave to sit again at a later hour of the day.

8. P assports Bill.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On motion of Senator Gardiner, the debate was adjourned. Ordered--That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

9. Aliens R egistration B ill.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On motion of Senator Gardiner, the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

10. I mmigration B ill.—The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the further consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Clause 3 further considered. On motion of Senator Senior, the following amendment was made, after debate, viz., page 1, line 25, leave out “ anarchist or ”. .

Senator Gardiner moved a further amendment, viz., page 2, lines 1 and 2, leave out “ or who is opposed to organized government,”. Debate ensued. Amendment, by leave, temporarily withdrawn. Senator Senior moved a further amendment, viz., page 2, lines 1 and 2, leave out “ who is opposed to”. Debate ensued. Question—put. Committee divided—

Senator Earle. And so it was resolved in the affirmative. Clauses 4-6 agreed to. Clause 7 read— On motion of the Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), the following amendment

was made, viz., line 35, leave out “ an anarchist or ”, and insert “ a ”. Clause 7, as amended, agreed to. Clause 8 debated and agreed to. Title agreed to.
