JOURNALS OF SENATE.

FRIDAY, 23rd APRIL, 1920.

1 M eeting of S enate.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS. -

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

4. P assports B ill.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), pursuant to leave granted on the 21st April, 1920, brought up a Bill for an Act relating to Passports. Bill read a first time, and second reading made an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

5. A liens R egistration B ill.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), pursuant to leave granted on the 21st April, 1920, brought up a Bill for an Act relating to the Registration of Aliens. Bill read a first time, and second reading made an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

6. P apers.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell) laid on the Table the following Papers, viz. :— Pursuant to Statute— Customs Act.—Regulations amended.—Statutory Rules 1920, No. 50—No. 55.

7. P rinting Committee : F irst R eport.— Senator Newland, pursuant to notice, moved— That the Report from the Printing Committee, presented to the Senate on 22nd April, 1920, be adopted. Question—put and passed.

8. A ustralian I mperial F orce Canteens F unds B ill.—Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Bill, as reported. The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) moved—That the Report be adopted. Question—put and passed.

9. Suspension of Standing and S essional Orders.— The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) moved—That so much of the Standing and Sessional Orders be suspended as would prevent the Australian Imperial Force Canteens Funds Bill being passed through its remaining stages without delay. Question·—put and passed, there being an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators present,

and no dissentient voice.

10. Australian I mperial F orce Canteens F unds B ill.—The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) moved—That the Bill be now read a third time. Question—put and passed. Bill read a third time and passed.

11. I mmigration B ill.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Question—put and passed. Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

Clauses 1 and 2 agreed to. In the Committee.

Clause 3 read. To report progress and ask leave to sit again.

The President resumed the C hair; and Senator Shannon, from the Committee, reported that the Committee had considered the Bill and had made progress, and asked leave to sit again. Ordered—That the Committee have leave to sit again on the next day of sitting.

12. A djournm ent.—The Senate adjourned at thirteen minutes to twelve o’clock noon, till Wednesday next at three p.m.

13. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Bakhap, Barker, Barnes, Bolton, Ferricks (on leave), Grant, Guy (on leave), Keating, Lynch, Maughan, McDougall (on leave), Mulcahy (on leave), O’Loghlin, and Plain.
