JOURNALS OF THE SENATE,

THURSDAY, 15th APRIL, 1920.

1. M eeting of S en at e.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS.

3. P a p e r.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen) laid on the Table the following Paper, viz.:— Pursuant to Statute— Papua Act.—Infirm and Destitute Natives Account—-Statement of the Transactions of the

Trustees, 1918-19.

4. Q uestions.—Questions on notice were answered.

5. L eave of A bsence.—Senator Earle, pursuant to notice, moved—That two months’ leave of absence be granted to Senator Mulcahy on account of urgent private business. Question—put and passed.

6. A u stra lia n I m pe r ia l F orce Ca n t e e n s F u n ds B il l .— The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate ensued. On motion of Senator Foil, the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting!

7. W ar G ratuity B il l.—The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate ensued.

At half-past six p.m. the sitting of the Senate was suspended till eight p.m.

Debate, interrupted by the suspension of the sitting, resumed. Question—put and passed. Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Clause 1 agreed to. Clause 2 read. To report progress and ask leave to sit again.

The President resumed the Chair ; and Senator Shannon, from the Committee, reported that the Committee had considered the Bill and had made progress, and asked leave to sit again. Ordered—That the Committee have leave to sit again to-morrow.
