JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.
WEDNESDAY, 24th MARCH, 1920.
1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.
2. PRAYERS.
3. P aper.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell) laid on the Table the following Paper, viz. :— Pursuant to Statute— Tnter-State Commission Act.·—Sixth Annual Report of the Inter-State Commission.
4. Questions.— Questions on notice were answered.
5. I mmigration B ill.—The Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), pursuant to notice, moved—That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act to amend the “ Immigration Act 1901-1912.” Question—put and passed.
Bill presented and read a first time, and second reading made an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
6. Suspension of Standing Order No. 14.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen) moved— That Standing Order No. 1 4 be suspended so far as to permit the second reading of the Australian Soldiers’ Repatriation Bill to be moved before the Address-in-Reply is adopted. Question—put and passed, there being an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators
present, and no dissentient voice.
7. P ostponement.—Ordered—That Order of the Day No. 1, Government Business, be postponed till after the consideration of Order of the Day No. 2.
8. Australian Soldiers’ R epatriation B ill.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen), accord ing to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On motion of Senator Grant, the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.
9. Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Address-in -Reply.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the following Address-in-Reply be agreed to :—â
To Iiis Excellency the Governor-General.
May it please Your E xcellency— We, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia, in Parliament assembled, desire to express our loyalty to our Most Gracious Sovereign, and to thank Your Excellency for the Speech which you have been pleased to address to Parliament. Debate resumed.
At half-past six p.m. the sitting of the Senate was suspended till eight p.m.
Debate, interrupted by the suspension of the sitting, resumed. Question—put and passed. Ordered—That the Address-in-Reply be presented to His Excellency the Governor-General by the President and such Senators as may desire to accompany him.

10. A djo urnm ent.— The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Milieu) moved—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—-put and passed.
The Senate adjourned at thirteen minutes past ten p.m. till to-morrow at three p.m.
