JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

FRIDAY, 19th MARCH, 1920.

1. M eeting of Senate.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS. '

3. Governor-General’s Message.—Supply Bill (No. 4) 1919-20.—The following Message from the Deputy of His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by Mr. President:— .

The following Bill intituled “Supply Act (No. 4) 1919-20,” as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Deputy of the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Act.

Melbourne, 18th March, 1920.

4. Governor-General’s Opening Speech—Address-in-R eply.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the following Address-in-Reply be agreed to :—

To His Excellency the Governor-General.

May it P lease Your E xcellency :

We, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia, in Parliament assembled, desire to express our loyalty to our Most Gracious Sovereign, and to thank Your Excellency for the Speech which you have been pleased to address to Parliament.

Debate resumed.

At one p.m. the sitting of the Senate was suspended till half-past two p.m.

Debate, interrupted by the suspension of the sitting, resumed. On motion of Senator Senior the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

5. Australian Soldiers’ R epatriation Bill.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen), pursuant to leave granted on the 12th March, 1920, brought up a Bill for an Act to make provision for the Repatriation of Australian Soldiers and for other purposes. Bill read a first time, and second reading made an Order of the Day for Wednesday next.

6. P aper.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen) laid on the Table the following Paper, viz. :— By Command— Sugar Industry : Report of Royal Commission.

7. The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen), on behalf of the Vice-President of the Executive Council (Senator Russell), by leave, gave notice of motion.

8. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at thirteen minutes to four p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.

9. ATTENDANCE.—Present, all the Members except Senators Bakliap, Bolton, Gardiner, Grant, Guy (on leave), Keating, Maughan, McDougall, Mulcahy, Needham, Pratten, Reid, and Thomas.
