1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.

4. Adjournment to Debate Matter of Urgency.—Senator Barnes, in order to discuss a matter of urgent public importance, viz., The dismissal of persons from the Commonwealth Public Service, as a result of Commissioner Barnett’s Reports, moved—That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till Friday, 12th September, at 10 a.m. Debate ensued. Question—put and negatived.

5. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

6. Notice of Motion W ithdrawn.—Notice of Motion No. 5, Private Business, in the name of Senator Needham, was withdrawn.

7. Postponements.—Ordered—That the following postponements be made, viz. :—Private Business, Notice of Motion No. 10, until Thursday, 2nd October n e x t; Government Business, Notices of Motion Nos. 1 and 2, until Wednesday next.

8. Aliens R egistration Bill.—The Acting Minister for Defence (Senator Russell), according to Order, moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On motion of Senator Gardiner, the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

9. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at half-past four p.m. till to-morrow at eleven a.m.

10. Attendance.—P resent, all the Members except Senators Earle, Fairbairn, Guy (on leave), Keating, and Pearce (on leave).
