JOURNALS OF THE SENATE.

• FRIDAY, 2 2 n d AUGUST, 1919.

1. M eeting of Senate.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.

2. PRAYERS.

3. P aper.—The Minister for Repatriation (Senator Millen) laid on the Table the following Paper,. viz. :— Public Service Act 1902-1918.—Promotion of T. O’Callaghan, Attorney-General’s Department.

4. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

5. P ostponement.—Ordered—That Private Business, Notice of Motion No. 1, be postponed until Thursday, 2nd October next.

6. Commercial Activities Bill.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question— That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed.

At one p.m. the sitting of the Senate was suspended till half-past two p.m.

Debate, interrupted by the suspension of the sitting, resumed. _ Question—put and passed. .

Bill read a second time. -The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into a Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

In the Committee.

Clause 1 considered. To report progress and ask leave to sit again.

: The President resumed the Chair ; and Senator Shannon, from the Committee, reported that the Committee had considered the Bill and had made progress, and asked leave to sit again. Ordered—That the Committee have leave to sit again on the next day of sitting.

7. Moratorium Bill.-—The Acting Minister for Defence (Senator Russell), according to Order, moved— That the Bill be now read a second time. On motion of Senator McDougall the debate was adjourned. ;

Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

8. P a p e r.—The Acting Minister for Defence (Senator Russell) laid on the Table the following Paper, viz. :— - .

Pursuant to Statute— Public Service Act 1902-1918.—Promotion of W. J. Neilsen, Prime Minister’s Department.

9. A d j o u r n m e n t .— The Acting Minister for Defence (Senator Russell) moved— That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed. - .

The Senate adjourned at a quarter to four·p.m. till Wednesday next at three p.m.

10. A ttendance .— Present, all the Members except Senators Barker, Lieut.-Col. Bolton, Guy (on leave),. Maughan, Mulcahy, Pearce (on leave), Col. Rowell, and Senior.
