Senator Harradine, pursuant to Notice of Motion not objected to as a Formal Motion, moved-That the Senate notes that-

(a) today, Thursday, 23 October 1986, is the 30th Anniversary of the spontaneous uprising of the Hungarian people, including students, farmers and workers, against the oppression of basic rights and freedoms by a pro-Soviet regime;

(b) tens of thousands of refugees left Hungary and a significant number were accepted as settlers in Australia where they have contributed to the Nation's progress and diversity;

(c) many others were killed or transported to the Soviet Union when the uprising was brutally suppressed by Soviet troops; and

(d) Hungary is still controlled by a pro-Soviet Communist regime which continues to deny basic rights and freedoms to its citizens.
