The Minister for Finance (Senator Walsh) tabled the following Paper:

Statement to Parliament on Public Service Reforms by the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Public Service Matters, dated 25 September 1986.

Leave refused: The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney) sought leave to move a motion that the Senate take note of the Paper.

Objection being raised, leave not granted.

Suspension of Standing Orders: Senator Chaney moved-That so much of the Standing and Sessional Orders be suspended as would prevent Senator Chaney moving a motion that the Senate take note of the Paper.

Debate ensued.

Question-put and passed.

Senator Chaney thereupon moved-That the Senate take note of the Paper.

Ordered-That the debate be adjourned till the next day of sitting, and that Senator Chaney have leave to continue his speech on the resumption of the debate.
