NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION (SAFEGUARDS) BILL 1986

The Minister for Resources and Energy (Senator Evans), pursuant to Notice of Motion not objected to as a Formal Motion, moved-That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act to make provision in relation to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and to establish, in accordance with certain international treaties and agreements to which Australia is a party, a system for the imposition and maintenance of nuclear safeguards in Australia, and for related matters.

Question-put and passed.

Bill presented, and on the motion of Senator Evans read a first time.

Suspension of Standing Orders to prevent delay: Senator Evans, pursuant to contingent notice, moved-That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through its remaining stages without delay.

Senator Evans moved-That this Bill be now read a second time.

Explanatory Memorandum: Senator Evans tabled an Explanatory Memorandum relating to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation (Safeguards) Bill 1986.

Ordered, pursuant to Order of the Senate of 14 April 1986-That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the first day of sitting in August 1986.
