SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT--STANDING COMMITTEE--REFERENCE

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion by Senator Jessop--

That the following matter be referred to the Standing Committee on Science and the Environment: The use of phenoxy chemicals and chemicals containing dioxin, with particular reference to:

(a) their ecological effects; and

(b) their effects on human and animal health.

And on the amendment moved thereto by Senator Grimes, viz: At end of motion, add "", and that in considering this matter the Committee deal first with the possible effects on Vietnam veterans of exposure to herbicides and report to the Senate within 8 weeks after this day on the desirability of an independent judicial inquiry into that problem''.

Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.

Senator Townley, at the request of Senator Jessop, by leave, amended the motion to read as follows: That the following matter be referred to the Standing Committee on Science and the Environment: The use of pesticides, particularly phenoxy chemicals and chemicals containing dioxin with reference to:

(a) their ecological effects; and

(b) their effects on human and animal health,

and that in considering this matter the Committee deal first with the possible effects on Vietnam veterans of exposure to herbicides.
