Senator COONAN (Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer) (4:58 PM) —by leave—I make this statement on behalf of the Hon. Philip Ruddock MP, the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. The order arises from a motion moved by Senator Bartlett, agreed by the Senate on 25 March 2003, which requests a copy of a Memorandum of Understanding on Consular Matters—an MOU—between the government of Australia and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. I wish to inform the Senate that the government does not consider it to be in the public interest to table the MOU in the Senate. The MOU, which deals with sensitive immigration matters, was signed on the understanding that it is a confidential agreement between governments that will not be released publicly at this time.
