Mr Wood asked the Minister for Finance and Deregulation in writing on 11 November 2008:

In respect of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) recording a net deficit from ordinary activities in 2007-08: (Australian Federal Police, Annual Report 2007-08, page 20): (a) at what stage in 2007-08 did the AFP request approval from him to run at an operating loss; and (b) what was his response, including his reasons for allowing the AFP to run at an operating loss during that period.

Mr Tanner (Minister for Finance and Deregulation) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

(a)   On 10 April 2008 the Minister for Home Affairs wrote to me seeking approval to budget for a 2007-08 operating loss.

(b)   In response, I approved the AFP budgeting for an operating loss of $43 million, on the basis of specifically identified cost pressures being faced by the AFP in 2007-08, noting advice from the Minister for Home Affairs that the AFP was not facing longer-term financial pressures.
