Mr RUDDOCK —Has the Minister for Territories and Local Government been apprised of the urgent need for repairs to the Cowarra Dam on the upper reaches of the Bredbo River? Is it true that in the event of an unusually heavy rainstorm there could be a partial collapse and possible pollution with tailings as far as the Murrumbidgee River? Has New South Wales, contrary to advice available to the Minister, formed the opinion that a possible dam collapse involves a minimal risk? What action will the Minister be taking, either independently or in concert with his New South Wales colleagues, to overcome this significant risk to the Australian Capital Territory and its waterways?

Mr UREN —I have not been informed of the seriousness of this matter. I will take it up with my Department and certainly with the New South Wales authority concerned. To date I have had no reports on the matter from my Department, but I will examine it and report back to the honourable member.
