Mr BEAZLEY (Special Minister of State)(12.00) —I move:

(1) Clause 3, page 3, lines 8 and 9, omit the definition of 'Polling booth', substitute the following definition:

'Polling booth' means a building, structure, vehicle or enclosure, or a part of a building, structure, vehicle or enclosure, provided at a polling place, in pursuance of paragraph 98 (1) (b), for the purpose of taking votes during polling;.

This amendment, the first in a series of amendments to be moved by the Government, expands the definition in the original Act of what constitutes a polling booth. The Government decided on reflection that it was desirable to expand the definition of a polling booth to give it clarity because some of the other amendments to be moved down the line, and they will become obvious later because there is a requirement for an adjustment to one or two of them, make it very important that there is a clear understanding of what is meant by the term 'polling booth' in order that the possibilities for disputation arising out of matters relating to displays at polling booths are minimised. The Government has moved this amendment for that reason.

Clause, as amended, agreed to.
