Mr Fisher asked the Minister for Territories and Local Government, upon notice, on 14 September 1983:

(1) What consultation did the National Capital Development Commission have in calling the tender for installation of synthetic playing surfaces at the National Sports Centre, Bruce, Australian Capital Territory, with officers of the Department of Sport, Recreation and Tourism.

(2) Did the NCDC consult with personnel from the Australian Institute of Sport on their preferences for surfaces; if so, what was the outcome of these consultations.


Mr Uren —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

I am informed by the National Capital Development Commission that-

(1) Detailed consultations were held between the National Capital Development Commission and the Department of Territories and Local Government, the Australian Institute of Sport and the Department of Sport, Recreation and Tourism during the design of the Sports Training Facilities at the National Sports Centre, Bruce.

Results of the detailed evaluation of the products tendered for the synthetic turf installation at Bruce was presented to representatives of the various organisations at a meeting on 16 June 1983. The Department of Sport Recreation and Tourism was represented and supported the Commission's recommendation.

(2) Soccer coaches and players of the Australian Institute of Sport and international standard hockey players evaluated samples of the products tendered . The head soccer coach of the Institute of Sport also evaluated existing installations of the different products tendered. His detailed comments were taken into account in deciding which tenderer the contract should be awarded to.
