Question No. 77

Mr McVeigh asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 4 May 1983:

(1) During the 1983 election campaign did the Government undertake to exempt the freight component of the price of goods from sales tax.

(2) If so, when will this proposal be implemented, and how will it be done.

Mr Keating —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) In the election document Policies for Agriculture, there is the statement: Labor will exempt the freight element of the price of goods from sales tax.

(2) Like other proposals, this initiative has had to be put aside in view of the unprecedented prospective Budget deficit which faced the Government on coming to office.
