Question No. 72

Mr McVeigh asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 4 May 1983:

(1) Has his attention been drawn to decisions by waterfront workers and stevedores not to ship Australian canned fruits products to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics because the ships involved are not manned by Australian seamen.

(2) If so, what action is he taking to resolve this issue and so assist the export potential of the canned fruits industry.

Mr Kerin —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) I am not aware of any waterfront industrial action inhibiting shipments of canned fruit products to the USSR.

(2) Since 1981, the Australian Canned Fruits Corporation through one of its marketers, has been associated with negotiations to sell canned fruits to the Soviet Union. Discussions are continuing.
