Question No. 472

Mr Blanchard asked the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, upon notice , on 8 September 1983:

(1) Is it a fact that the occupational demand schedule, which is used as a guideline in assessing the occupational demand for potential migrants to Australia, is published at 6 monthly intervals.

(2) Is he satisfied that this schedule accurately reflects the changing nature of employment in Australia; if not, will he consider a monthly updating of this publication.

Mr West —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

(2) In my statement to the House on 18 May I announced that the Ministers for Employment and Industrial Relations, Education and Youth Affairs, the Treasurer and I would look for alternatives to the recruitment of skilled workers overseas based on manpower planning and emphasising the training and retraining of Australians.

The review, which is examining alternatives to the occupational demand schedule about which dissatisfaction has been previously expressed, is nearing completion and I expect that the Government will be examining its findings shortly.
