Mr LLOYD —Is the Minister for Communications aware that estimated expenditure for salaries for both the radio and television news services of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is lower for 1983-84 than actual expenditure for 1982- 83 but expenses for these news services will be higher? Does this mean that fewer ABC journalists will be employed and outside news services taken notwithstanding the statements and promises by the Minister and the Government that the ABC's own news services would be strengthened?

Mr DUFFY —The matter of what services will be employed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in respect of journalists and other employees is one for the ABC. Early in this session there was a long period in this Parliament when honourable members opposite had some difficulty in understanding the independence of the ABC. In respect of the specific matters raised by the honourable member for Murray, I have not been informed and have no knowledge of any proposed cuts.
