Question No. 102

Mr Keogh asked the Minister for Housing and Construction, upon notice, on 5 May 1983:

(1) What was the weekly hire and operation costs of the dredges used for the sand dumping on the reclamation work for the new Brisbane Airport.

(2) Can he say what action had been initiated by the former Prime Minister or any Minister of the former Government, between election in December 1975 and defeat at the recent election to support any proposal to re-sand the Wynnum- Manly foreshores by (a) making those dredges available, (b) proposing to meet fully or partially the cost, (c) seeking agreement with the Queensland Government and the Brisbane City Council to undertake the work and, (d) considering any proposal of this kind for re-sanding.

Mr Hurford —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Dredging and reclamation work at Brisbane Airport has been carried out on a lump sum contract basis. No weekly costs are available. Average costs over the duration of the work are estimated at $600 000 per week.

(2) The Wynnum-Manly foreshores are vested for management in the Brisbane City Council and any maintenance or replenishment is entirely its responsibility. The Brisbane City Council has made no formal approaches to the Australian Government with beach re-sanding proposals.
