REPORT OF THE JOINT LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

The Library Committee has the honour to report as follows :-

The Library now contains 32,559 volumes, with about 4,000 pamphlets, and 1,600 bound volumes of newspapers. The collection of plates, maps, and charts has largely been added to, and in addition, type-written copies of documents relating to early French voyages to Australia have been obtained from various Public Libraries in France, and more are being prepared.

Public attention has recently been called to the forthcoming sale of interesting manuscripts and other documents relating to Governor Macquarie and his administration of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. The Committee has endeavoured to secure these records, but so far without success. It, however, hopes that even if it does not obtain them, they will be deposited in Australia, although as negotiations are still pending, nothing definite can now be said.

The first volume of the Australian Historical Records published since the Commonwealth took charge of them was issued on the 8th instant. It consists of facsimiles of interesting Commissions, Pro clamations, &c., some issued within a few days of the foundation of the colony of New South Wales, on 26th January, 1788, with a short introduction by the Editor.

No changes in the staff have been made during the year,

W. ELLIOT JOHNSON,

Chairman of the Library Committee.
