Senator Scullion said the awards encouraged primary and secondary school students to learn about Australia’s wartime heritage and develop an innovative way to commemorate Anzac Day.

Katherine School of the Air held an on-air Anzac Day ceremony that included simulated interviews, acknowledgement of Indigenous involvement in wars and conflicts and an address by a current serving member of the Australian Defence Force. Student ranging from pre-school to Year 7 were involved in classwork that included baking Anzac Biscuits, reflective writing and learning about wartime memorabilia.

St Joseph’s College has both a primary and secondary campus and the college commemorated Anzac Day 2004 with a whole school approach. Activities commenced with an excursion to the RAAF Tindal Base, followed by a visit to the college by a Group Commander from the base. Classroom activities included wreath making, a combined Anzac Assembly attended by a number of Defence Force parents, Anzac biscuit baking, poster making with themes relevant to the junior and senior campuses, and video productions on the Anzac tradition. These were scripted and acted by senior students. Students participated in the Katherine Anzac Day Service and a powerpoint presentation was produced for display in the College main office.

“Both schools are to be congratulated for their efforts in remembering and honouring the service of Australians in wars and conflicts. Anzac Day is an integral part of our history and a day of rememberance for many Australians and Territorians” said Senator Scullion.
